Adolescence entails traveling a challenging road as it is, but it can be even more difficult for our adopted and foster teens. Our kids typically have many unanswered questions related to their adoption or separation from their biological family. These questions can provoke fear, anger, low self-esteem and many, many other emotions!
Pair these hard emotions together with how alone our kids feel because most of their friends and family can't relate to their struggles and what we get is a teen who loses their way! School suffers, friendships are strained or unhealthy and family is really hard to do. The future becomes a means to get away or a frightening endeavor that gets sabotaged regularly - either way they go into it alone and unprepared!
Do You Know How To Help Your Teen NOT Lose Their Way?
Even if your child has always known he was adopted. Even though your teen remembers the struggles from the past, adolescence brings with it a new understanding of the world - realizations about differences, poverty, culture, and so much more. All of this new understanding and a deeper ability to think and reason gives rise to new questioning and the need to dig deeper! Identity is now at stake...Who Am I is first and foremost in the mind of our kids. Who Am I and where do I fit in the world? Who Am I and how should I feel about myself? Who Am I and what direction can and should I go?
The questioning, WHO AM I, is like a missing piece of the puzzle. A very important puzzle...YOUR CHILD! The key is to help them put together all of the pieces - feel whole. The hurdle is that their pieces are sometimes spread all over the place...the county, the state, the country and even the world! Sometimes their pieces are damaged and need to be mended, revisited and repaired. Sometimes, unfortunately, their pieces are lost forever and need to be replaced.
Helping your adopted or foster teen navigate finding their identity, like everything else you do as Intentional Parents, has to be done differently! You, along with so many others, hold some of the pieces of the puzzle. It is crucial that you help!
Let me guide you and your child towards finding, mending and putting together his pieces to create the WHOLE puzzle that is your child! Which will help him acquire an IDENTITY that he will be proud to claim; one that will help her choose and nurture friendships that will be true and healthy, one that creates positive self-esteem and anI Am ME and I Am Worthy of Great Things outlook for the future!
This exploration of your child's identity may be a bit scary for him/her. It will take some work and commitment on your part as Mom and Dad. It is an investment in your son or daughters future happiness and stability! I think the saying goes...The faint of heart need not apply!
