Lesson Learned

It’s always a challenge to try something new. That was confirmed to me again on my trip home from Kansas City.

As the sun was setting along Interstate 35, I turned on the headlights in my rental car.  Or at least I thought I had since the dashboard lights turned on. I continued to drive for many miles before I questioned that were even on. Nope, they were not. By then it was dark and I was fumbling to try to find out how to turn the lights while still driving 70 mph. Wipers on…oops, that button wasn’t it. Windshield fluid spray…nope, not it either. Defroster on…not it. Blinkers going…not that button either. Got the brights working as long as I held it. Finally, the headlights were on.

In hindsight I think, why the heck did I not just pull the car over and look at the manual? But NOPE, I kept thinking I’d get it. I would figure it out. Next time, I will be reading the manual before I leave the rental car lot. And certainly not be afraid or bull headed to pull over and find the answer rather than just fumbling from button to button.

Too often people stay stuck. They just keep fumbling, thinking they’ll figure it out or that they don’t even know there’s somewhere to get the answers. This time I lucked out. Less than one mile after I got the lights turned on, there was a police car pulled over on the side of the road. Thinking the officer wouldn’t have thought driving without my lights on was a good idea. Just sayin…
